Simon is a French Horn player with many years of performance experience. He has been performing for most of his life, with the years subsequent to studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, working as a full time professional player. His playing included orchestral, small ensemble, pit work and solo performing.
His first role was as principal horn with the Las Palmas Symphony Orchestra. During the year long contract he played in many orchestral and chamber concerts as well as an extensive opera season with singers such as Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras among others. He built a very large repertoire during this period as the orchestra worked on a two weekly concert cycle touring towns and villages culminating in a final performance at the main theatre. During this time he also performed with a wind quintet and octet and gained further experience in a genre that was kindled while performing in and around the London area while still at music college.
His second role was as co-principal horn with CAPAB (Cape Performing Arts Board) at the Nico Malan Opera House (now Artscape) in Cape Town. He worked for both a full time professional ballet and opera company coupled with some extra outside work with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra. He was with this orchestra for five years and performed in a very diverse and large range of repertoire. The works performed included most of the grand operas from Puccini and Verdi to Wagner including the Ring Cycle and Tristan and Isolde, most of the classical ballets including Sylvia, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker to Prokofiev and Stravinsky's works including the Rite of Spring. CAPAB performed a number of new commissions from classical style works to some very avant garde compositions.
More recently he has performed in orchestras for choirs and symphonic works as a freelance and regular member of some semi professional orchestras. He has also worked in pit orchestras for many musicals including West Side Story, Beauty and the Beast, White Christmas, Sweeney Todd, Titanic, Les Miserables, Evita, South Pacific, The Sound of Music, Kiss Me Kate, Showboat and many more. He also ran a very successful wind quintet called QuintIsle prior to relocating to the West Country.
