The Tutors

Our staff are all fully professional and have many years of teaching experience. Below is a brief description of every member of Scarpia Music showing their experience and the instruments they teach.

Simon Keates

Simon has had over 40 years of experience in music both as a performer and a teacher. He trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and then worked as a full time professional horn player with the Las Palmas Symphony Orchestra followed by the Cape Town Opera and Ballet Companies (CAPAB) orchestra. He also played with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra in larger works that required more than the usual four horns. He has worked with many freelance ensembles and also as a soloist. Simon has played drums professionally with various bands and show orchestras over the years and really enjoys small improvisational jazz ensembles.

Simon's first teaching role was with the West Sussex Music Centre in the early 1970’s which was followed by teaching brass and running a brass band at Bishops Diocesan College in Cape Town. He also taught french horn at Cape Town and Stellenbosch Universities. More recently he has been teaching instrumental music in brass, drum kit and keyboard, wider opportunities (first access) and Key Stage 2 curriculum music in many schools and privately on the isle of Wight. Simon recently moved to Plymouth for family reasons and is starting to build a new client base in this region while also working alongside the Plymouth Education Hub.
